3 Best Day Trips from Sydney

© Shawn Huang

There are enough day trips from Sydney to fill a week . The city is surrounded by national parks, all World Heritage listed - Blue Mountains to the west, Royal National Park to the south, and Ku-ring-gai Chase to the north.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

30 minutes drive north of Sydney is the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park with winding creeks, rainforest, stunning ocean views, sandstone cliffs and mangroves. The region is also famous for its marinas, cafes, and well-equipped picnic areas. You can drive the campervan to the Bobbin Head Road entrance of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park or catch the train to McCarrs Creek Terminus.

Blue Mountains National Park

90 minutes to the west is the Blue Mountains National Park, a walker's paradise, with over 140km of tracks, mountain vistas, sandstone steps and ladders down steep gorges, eucalypt forests (which give the mountains their distinct blue colour), secret swimming holes, waterfalls, diverse forests and fern groves. Jenolan Caves are in the area, a magical sight with watery floors and sparkling stalagmites and stalactites. Afterwards, Katoomba's historic Carrington Hotel is a great place for a rewarding drink and bite to eat. Perry's Lookdown campground in the Blue Mountains National Park has campervan access should you wish to spend some time here.

Royal National Park

An hour south is the Royal National Park with rugged coastline, rainforest, beach scrub, soaring cliffs, and secluded beaches. Between June and November you might see whales migrating. Riverside camping for campervans is available at Bonnie Vale. A big sand spit makes it an ideal protected swimming spot. There are flushing toilets, hot showers and drinking water on site. There are cycle trails, walking trails, cafes, picnic and BBQ areas, fishing, swimming, and canoeing throughout the Royal National Park.
